Art of the T-Shirt

Inspired by the Hot Rodder cartoon artist and visionary "Big Daddy" Ed Roth of the 60's era, Juan was creating his own "hot rod subculture" designs with hand drawn "Magic Marker" painted T-shirts.

By the 1970's the function of the T-Shirt had evolved from the 

"James Dean" undergarment to the "wearable canvas" of self expression while becoming a viable advertising medium that is now a mainstream fashion staple of the textile industry.

The art of Airbrushing on T-shirts and signs became the next creative inspiration to further the excitement of the visual expression as its applications became a lucrative venture to pursuit during the mid 70's.  Custom printing T-shirts for Campus sororities, clubs, teams and local retail merchants lead to the eventual opening of the business.  One H Studio was created in July 1980 after graduating from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree concentrating on Graphic Arts.  The studio was focused primarily as a graphic design and T-shirt screen printing operation which eventually lead to printing signs for local sign shops that were not interested in the screen print medium as an in-house service.  The exposure and the relationship building with the area sign shops lead OHS to an expanse of knowledge and applications of the sign craft.

Art of the Sign

The CAD/CAM technology was brought into our arsenal of productivity when it was introduced to the industry in the early 80's.  The ability to create vinyl cut lettering and simple icons became a major breakthrough in efficiency and output consistency for new applications in the graphic arts industry.

By 1990 the introduction of the Microsoft Windows graphic user interface in conjunction with our CAD vinyl cutting unit revealed the direction the graphic arts industry was heading.  OHS harnessed the technology and pursued its advancements in design and productivity.  When the Digital printing revolution began taking stage in the mid 90's, the art of the sign painter was foregoing a process of near extinction for indoor /outdoor murals, billboards and other applications that required their specialized talents.  Embracing the new capabilities of the computer canvas with the digital print medium had began to compliment the shops need to compete in the new technology of art.  At the turn of the millennium the opportunity to obtain the Santa Maria Sign Company, Houston Texas, a 2nd generation sign company, was presented to our studio which would introduce us to the sign craft of the manufacturing, installation and service of illuminated signs for retail and commercial property applications.
